This week concludes our mini-unit on figurative language. The week will begin with students adding figurative language in text excerpts, analyzing figurative language for its effect and meaning on text, and then moving towards purposefully incorporating figurative language in student writing.
The following outlines the activities and assignments for the week of October 29th to November 2nd:
Monday- Adding figurative language to text excerpts.
Tuesday- Rewriting a scene from a not-so-scary story in Boo! Made You Jump! by Lauren Child to purposefully incorporate figurative language.
Wednesday- Analyzing figurative language for its effect and meaning in “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe.
Thursday- Share student writing pieces/ Review for unit test.
Friday- Unit Test/ Reading Log #1 due. The unit test consists of identifying examples of figurative language and a writing portion in which students will receive an image and use four of the eight figurative language techniques to write a paragraph describing it.
Also, students will receive information on Monday on second quarter reading logs. If students earned 100% of his or her AR point goal and at least an 85% quiz average, they will not be required to complete reading logs for second quarter. However, students exempt from the assignment may choose to continue turning in reading logs. Keep in mind, while a student may be exempt from the homework assignment, reading logs can help a final grade by adding more points to the final total.
Have a great weekend!
