The short story unit is in full force as students explore answers to the question: How do writers effectively craft a short story? Emphasis is on the word craft because writers don't simply "write" stories, there is much more to the process. This week students will explore how writers use conflict to effectively craft a story.
Throughout the unit students will be exposed to a variety of media- short stories, novel excerpts, and even movie clips- to better understand the use of crafting stories. In particular we are using The Chronicles of Harris Burdick which features illustrations by Chris Van Allsburg. He has also illustrated other familiar books including Jumanji and The Polar Express. On Wednesday, students will select a Chris Van Allsburg illustration to base their short story on. Check out the week plan and project information below:
Monday- Explore how writers use conflict to effectively craft stories in "Under the Rug" by Jon Scieszka.
Tuesday- Take a deeper examination of "Under the Rug" by exploring the use of plot and completing a plot diagram.
Wednesday- Select short story illustration and MAP goal setting.
Thursday- Map Reading Test.
Friday- Vocab quiz and homework due.
